I’ve been waiting for this TV to come out for some time. I currently have the XVT472SV (the version without VIA). When I tried to activate the device on my Netflix account, it told me I had to have one of the unlimited plans with Netflix (I currently watch 5hrs/month with my current plan). So, I couldn’t use this with Netflix as I do with any other Silverlight player.

I have had this TV for about two weeks now. Upgraded from a 32″ Sony LCD.

Few things to add on top of other reviewers.

1. Like the title says, its a awesome TV for a great price. When I bought this TV it wasn’t available in-stores for me to check out in person. I took a risk in trusting an expensive purchase solely on reviews and it paid off.

2. The blooming issue that some reviewers mentioned is a very minor issue IMO. Its only sometimes noticable when there is a pitch black background with lighting on a specific object.

3. This TV has a 120 Hz refresh rate with ClearScan technology from Toshiba. Clearscan, as far as I understand, basically interpolates frames generated with the 120 Hz refresh. Commonly people get confused between frame rate and refresh rate. HDMI content that is generated by your cable box or Blueray player has a frame rate of 60 Hz. This is always constant. The LCD TVs available in the market these days offer refresh rate of 60,120 & 240Hz. So basically a TV that has a 120 Hz refresh rate would simply display the same video frame for two successive refreshes. As you can tell a 240 Hz TV won’t get you too much more than a 120 Hz TV. So I would like to ask all you future buyers to not give in to the marketing fluff . Buy a TV only after understanding all the features.

4. Some initial units of this TV had a sound issue where there was some random audio echo. I haven’t seen this issue with my TV and from what I have learnt on the web, people who saw this problem got firmware updates that fixed the problem.

I went to our local electronics store to buy a Sony 46″LCD, when I saw the Toshiba, for $1099 I was blown away! An LED backlit LCD TV for that price, I had to have it. I’ve had it 9 days, and I really do like it in many ways. Amazing picture, esp. on HiDef. But, I have the dreaded “garbled sound” after 2-3 hours. I contacted the store, and they agreed to take it back if I wanted, but I really don’t, if I can get it to work correctly. Toshiba suggested replacing the HDMI cable with component video (DVD to TV), and also audio cables, I find that unacceptable. The Tech on their hot line, call 1-800-631-3811, was very helpful. He first suggested ditching my 1.3 HDMI cable & replacing it with a 1.4 cable. I ordered one, will find out in a week, after it arrives. He also suggested going into the setup menu, and under AV, HDMI, shutting off the “Deep Color” option, I did this tonight. Lastly he acknowledged that they had a firmware update they were working on, and it would be sent to me on 2/17, in the form of a USB flash drive that I can plug into the service port on the side & I could update the firmware myself. I will know more in a week or 2, so unless I have further problems in the meantime, I will wait & install the new cable, & then the firmware, & will update my comments then.

I took a chance on it when I bought it, I believe this model just came out in Sept 09′, so I will be patient,
to a point.

UPDATE: I was contacted this week (after asking for the the 4th or 5th time) that a “Fix” for the Garbled sound problem had been developed, and that I could call my local factory authorzed service center. I set upp an appointment, and was pleasantly surprised when they tol me they would copme to my house to repair the TV.

The repair man is coming today for the second time to fix my tv. Under warranty. We’ve been working with sharp, but it took 2 weeks the first time even to get a repairman out. and it’s been another week and a half. So much for the preferred aquios appointments and the loaner tv. I have seen neither and the thing hasn’t worked since we got it. Sharp better up its game soon or we’re never buying from them again. My husband said the picture was amazing for the 15 min it worked after it was “repaired” the first time so if you get one w/o problems it’s beautiful. Recently bought this at a price much better than any box store could offer – even on sale. Took it out of the box, plugged it in and a few clicks of the remote later it was up and running. when using the greater depth of contrast that exists on the
Samsung 8500 particularly in the black and white ranges you must change the ‘dynamic’ range to ‘normal’, ‘standard’ or ‘movie’ as required. .. to the age of the movie being watched. After working at best buy in the hometheater dept you develop a dorkishly fond interest in electronics. If you have a keen eye for quality or have OCD you will be distracted by the motion jutter on this TV. For example, “A bugs life” when they’re cascading over the grass, the grass instead of being clear is all blurred.

Now REGARDLESS of what ever I just said if you can get this tv under four hundred bucks you are making a good purchase. You basically have to make a comprimise, price and it’s purpose over quality. I have this tv for my bedroom and it’s great. On the wall, stylish and serves it’s purpose. I have a Sony XBR LCD in the main room and even though it’s twice as large it still has a better picture.

It’s funny I remember starting out looking for a 32 inch in the 3-4 hundred price range caught myself drifting into the 1000 to 1500 price range because you’ll always find something better. Then I remembered I already have a main tv for viewing, and 3D technology as well as other technological advancements will be out before you know it and then you’ll want another tv as well as already have the one you bought just been outdated. So if you want to fill the void now but loose less money when you decide to upgrade by xmas or sooner, choose this one or something like it.

I could’ve saved you from reading all this if I just put this up first: GREAT PRICE, GREAT LOOK, TERRIBLE 60hz motion. Then again you’re probably not me like me and are not dorkishly into this stuff, so just get this tv!

Coming from a previous Samsung 50 and 61″ DLP, 40″ 650 series TOC LCD, and now this 52″ beautiful 750 series TOC LCD tv.

The colors are nearly perfect out of the box, has plenty of input options, 240hz is great(compared to 120hz), great black level for an LCD, picture clarity and quality is amazing.

I can’t find anything wrong with this tv and beats it’s Sony XBR competition by a mile. If you don’t believe me, watch The Dark Knight.

Best settings are on Movie mode especially in a dark room. If a bright room, consider standard as it brightens things up a bit.
